Admissions

Deadline for receipt
of all Duke MSTP application materials: November 1, 2009

Application procedures

  • The Medical College Admission Test should be taken, if possible, no later than April of the year in which the application is submitted: American College Testing Programs and Services, Post Office Box 414, Iowa City, Iowa 52240. The test is given at various times throughout the year in numerous locations. Check the schedule on the MCAT web site. MCAT scores dated earlier than four years prior to the year of entry into medical school will not be considered.
  • Applicants to Duke MSTP apply simultaneously to MSTP and Duke University School of Medicine. The application to Duke MSTP is a subsection of the application to the School of Medicine. Applicants who are not admitted to MSTP remain eligible for admission to the School of Medicine.
  • The first segment of the application is submitted through The American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS): Association of American Medical Colleges, Suite 201, 2450 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037-1131. http://www.aamc.org/audienceamcas.htm. Please submit this initial application at least six weeks prior to the November 1 Duke MSTP deadline. It can take four to six weeks for verification of the AMCAS application and transmission of that application to Duke. Be sure to leave ample time for this process. In order to meet the November 1 Duke MSTP deadline for the supplemental application, applicants are advised to complete the AMCAS no later than September 15.
  • The Duke portion of the application is completed online. After receiving AMCAS applications, Duke School of Medicine contacts applicants with invitations to access Duke's Supplemental Application and Personal Account System. http://admissions.duhs.duke.edu/pas/
  • In setting up the Personal Account, applicants to MSTP should be sure to check the MSTP box when asked to indicate the program to which they are applying.
  • Electronic submission of letters of recommendation is preferred—via your premed advisory office and VirtualEvals. Paper letters are accepted, but electronic submission is preferred.
  • Please note: Any paper letters of recommendation for MSTP applicants should be sent directly to the MST Program office:
        Duke Medical Scientist Training Program
        Box 102005 DUMC
        Durham, North Carolina 27710.
  • The Duke application should be completed and submitted as early as possible to facilitate review by both the MSTP and School of Medicine admissions committees.
  • The supplemental application to Duke School of Medicine and Duke MSTP is due no later than November 1. Please note that the MSTP deadline is earlier than the general School of Medicine deadline.
  • Interviews of selected candidates are held from early October through the end of January.
  • MSTP admissions decisions are announced the second week of February.
  • Applicants admitted to MSTP will be asked to complete an additional application for the Duke University Graduate School. The MCAT scores are accepted as substitutes for the Graduate Record Examination scores for MSTP students.

Eligibility. Because a portion of the program’s funding is provided by a National Institutes of Health training grant, program participants must be United States citizens or official permanent residents of the US. This policy is likely to change in the near future, but not in time for the 2010 admissions season. While the program hopes to admit internationals in the future, the policy change will not be in place for Fall 2010.
